Jay Collins and the Northern Resistance
The saxophone player of choice for famous artists Gregg Allman, (the late) Levon Helm, and Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, Jay Collins has played on 2 Grammy-winning recordings with Mr. Helm, and a platinum-selling DVD with the Allman Brothers Band (Live at the Beacon Theater). Jay has also been “moon-lighting” as a singer-songwriter for years, but the secret is leaking out: His songs are being admired and recorded by young musicians in the Hudson Valley, New York City, and beyond. And on vocals, his granite pipes prompted Time Out NY to note that, “His soulful ‘croak’ definitely deserves to be heard!” and Blues Revue said, “Jay Collins plays a hot saxophone, but he covers a lot more ground than that….”

Fronting his own bands on gigs throughout the NY area, as well as performing and arranging with the horn section at Levon Helm Studio in Woodstock NY, Jay also toured with The Dukes of September, a collective featuring Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, and Michael McDonald. He is currently the horn arranger and saxophone player for the Gregg Allman Band, a gig he has held for the past 15 years. “He has a killer tone…”-Gregg Allman.

Collins is also proud of his work with other musicians like Ray LaMontagne, British soul man James Hunter, Melissa Etheridge, latin-jazz drummer Bobby Sanabria, and jazz artists Jacky Terrasson, and Blue Note legend Andrew Hill.

"With a surprisingly gruff voice, he delivers his rollicking original tunes that blend the down-and-out sensibility of Tom Waits with the barrelhouse American roots sound of The Band.” -San Francisco Chronicle/Contra Costa Times (CA)

His newest group, Jay Collins and the Northern Resistance, is composed of the finest young rock and roll players in upstate NY. Their new release, “The John Brown EP”, was released in the fall of 2016. Produced by Olivier Chastan, the new EP was recorded direct to tape at Waterfront Studios in Hudson, NY. For this recording Jay called on his band-mate from the Gregg Allman group, NYC guitarist Scott Sharrard, as well as the youthful sensation from Woodstock, guitarist and vocalist Connor Kennedy along with the rest of the “Northern Resistance”. "With a surprisingly gruff voice, he delivers his rollicking original tunes that blend the down-and-out sensibility of Tom Waits with the barrelhouse American roots sound of The Band.” -San Francisco Chronicle/Contra Costa Times (CA)
